Loves Park Man Dead After Police Standoff

A man is dead after he is found with what a single gunshot wound to the head.
Loves Park- Dozens of police agencies responded to an active shooter at 2316 Devon Ave., Loves Park around 9:30 P.M. Friday. Officers originally received a 911 call regarding a domestic dispute.

When police arrived on the scene they found an armed male who pointed a gun at police officers. Two Loves Park police officers then fired their weapons. It is not confirmed if the victim was struck by police gunfire.

The victim, is identified as David Zammuto, 49, was found with a single gunshot wound this his head at 2:00 A.M. Saturday. Police say it could have been self inflicted.

No one else was in the home at the time. Police evacuated a three block radius as a SWAT Team was called in for help. All neighbors have since been allowed to return home.

Loves Park Police Chief Jim Puckett says "just waiting and trying to get a response from the person in the house. You always hope for the best on these, and that we're going to have somebody in the house that's alive. But it just didn't turn out that way."

According to police, Zammuto had a gun on him. Loves Park Police Chief Jim Puckett says "the deceased male turned and pointed the gun at the officers. Two officers fired rounds at him into the house. At this point, we don't think or we don't know if the man was struck."

Neighbor Karen Stockwell was in shock. She has lived in the neighborhood for almost forty-four years. She was not sure what was going on."

Stockwell says "I didn't know it was gunshots. I had never heard gunshots before."

The incident is still under investigation. Toxicology and autopsy results are expected to be available within the next couple of weeks.
