Lutheran-Winnebago Preview

Scott Leber previews our Game Of The Week between Lutheran and Winnebago.
WINNEBAGO-It might be the greatest show on Stateline turf Friday night in high school football.  Lutheran taking on Winnebago in our Wendy’s Game Of The Week.

This could be a nightmare game for the defenses.  One of those games where the last team with the football wins.   Winnebago is averaging 40 points per game.  Lutheran is average 50 points per game.

"We’ve got a good offense. They’ve got a good offense. It’s probably going to be defense that’s gonna win it really," says Bago RB/LB Michael Pate.

Last week Lutheran put 66 points points on the board in a win over Rock Falls.

"It seems like every game we play is a shootout," says Lutheran coach Bruce Bazsali.

Last year these teams combined for 71 points…Lutheran won by three.  Two years ago they combined for 124 points.  Bago won that game.

"We’ve had some great games," says Bazsali.

Bago knows it needs to step up on the defensive end after giving up 33 points last week to Mendota.  But devising a game-plan to stop the Crusaders offense isn’t easy.  The Saders like to model themselves after the Oregon Ducks fast-paced attack.

"I’ll be honest. I don’t know where to begin," says Bago coach Mark Helm. "You try to do what you do. You play your style. We know who the kid in the backfield is. He’s another runner that you’ve got to tackle."

Lutheran’s win last year helped propel the Saders to a share of the Big Northern West Championship.  That shook up the conference hierarchy.

"We’re like the Beverly Hillbillies," says Bazsali. "We’ve moved into the upperclass neighborhood, and I don’t think people think we really belong there."

The Saders will get another chance to prove that they belong Friday night.

"If we get a win at Bago that would be a big confidence booster going into the rest of the games," says Lutheran QB Kendall Lawson.

"You just take your normal approach and do what you do well and try to contain what they do well, and hopefully it falls in your favor at some point," says Helm.

"It’s Bago. It’s a conference game. We’re both 3-0. It can’t get any better than this," says Bazsali.
