NIU BCS Bowl Bound Again?

Could lightning strike again for NIU's football team.
ROCKFORD-When the NIU Huskies went to the Orange Bowl last year it felt like a once in a lifetime opportunity for NIU fans.  But perhaps lightning is about to strike again.

The Huskies are 18th in the first BCS rankings out this week.  Where they wind up in early December will determine their bowl fate.

"We know we got there last year. Of course we want to make it again," says NIU offensive tackle Matt Krempel.

The Huskies are 7-0.  If they win out their final six games the bowl situation will take care of itself.

"Last year everything worked out and we went to a BCS game, so we know if we take care of our job and keep playing the same thing will happen this year," says safety Dechane Durante. "We’ll land where we want to land."

"Yes we can go to a BCS bowl," says defensive end Perez Ford. "But if we lose to Eastern Michigan everything’s out the door."

Rod Carey is aware of the BCS ranking, but he’s not putting much stock rankings here in October.

"I don’t know what this means," says Carey. "I know what it means right after the season. It means you’re going to be ranked there for your bowl and that possibly could men what type of bowl you get into. But right now it doesn’t mean anything."

High rankings can be fleeting.  Carey points to the 2003 NIU team for evidence of that.

"Ten years ago at this time this very week NIU was ranked number ten in the BCS. They ended up 10-2, 102 and didn’t go to a bowl game."

Carey will admit this much, being mentioned in the rankings helps in recruiting.

"When it comes to the recruiting side of things in general we’re in a good spot," says Carey. "I don’t want to say we’re in a better spot then we’ve ever been in because I haven’t been here the whole time. But I can say we’re in a really, really good spot right now."
