A Record Win Tops NIU's Christmas Wish List

NIU could set a school record for victories by winning the Poinsettia Bowl.
DEKALB-It won’t be a white Christmas for the NIU Huskies.  They’ll spend it in San Diego getting ready for the Poinsettia Bowl. Their Christmas wish is a school record victory in that game.  Scott Leber reports.

Huskie stadium is snow covered…the Huskies won’t have to look at that much longer. And thanks to their new indoor practice facility they’ve been avoiding the cold this week during practices.

"It’s pretty sweet, says NIU defensive tackle Ken Bishop. "Last year at this time we had to be outside in the cold, so I’m pretty sure everyone is thankful for it."

Had NIU beaten Bowling Green in the MAC Championship game, the Huskies would be packing their bags for Phoenix and the Fiesta Bowl.  But a trip to San Diego isn’t a bad consolation prize.

"I’ve never been to Caly, so I was happy. It’s something new. It’s an experience," says NIU safety Jimmie Ward.

"I’ve never been to San Diego. We’re going to a nice, sunny weather paying a great team Utah State," says NIU offensive lineman Jared Volk.

If the Huskies can win the Poinsettia Bowl, it’ll be their 13th victory of the season. That would be a school record.

"Although we weren’t able to reach our ultimate goal which was to win a championship, being able to get 13 wins is big," says Bishop.

"It’s a big deal.  Especially for the seniors finishing out with the most wins in one season for Northern Illinois. It’s a team effort. We just want to keep winning games. That’s what we do at NIU," says Volk.

The Poinsettia Bowl will be played December 26th at 8:30pm central time on ESPN.
