Police Investigate Rash of Deadly Hit-and-Run Incidents

Police markings on West State Street help officers piece together another deadly hit-and-run crash.

ROCKFORD- Police markings on West State Street help officers piece together another deadly hit-and-run crash. John Kuhn, 45, was found lying in the 2300 block of West State St. after being hit by a vehicle.

"We’re talking to some of his acquaintances that he was with about six blocks west when he was drinking some alcohol with them," explained Rockford Police Department Lieutenant Pat Hoey.

The Winnebago County Coroner's office says Kuhn’s cause of death was blunt force trauma of the head, neck, chest and abdomen.

"Even a car traveling the speed limit at 30 miles per hour, hits somebody it's going to do some severe injuries and it all matters on what part of the body hits the car, how do they land," said Lt. Hoey.

The crash is the fifth deadly hit-and-run in Rockford this year and that’s up from 2 in 2012.

Police responded to an average of two non-deadly hit-and-run crashes every day in September, but overall hit-and-run offenses have dropped over the last three years.

Lt. Hoey says part of that decrease is from neighborhood participation. Rockford Police Department also has a full-time traffic investigator dedicated to solving these cases.

The previous four deadly 2013 hit-and-runs have been solved and people arrested. At least two of those cases were directly solved by Crime Stoppers.
