SPRINGFIELD - There's some "creepy" stuff in the treasurer's vault under the state capitol.
It's home to the Unclaimed Property Division. When you don't pay the fee for your safety deposit box and the bank drills it out, this is where they send it. The treasurer's job is to try to get it back to you. All of the items and any unclaimed cash are put in a database for people to search.
So far this year, the I-Cash Division of the treasurer's office has processed more than 51,000 claims, on track for a record. The department has also returned more than $100 million in cash in 2013.
But there is still $1.7 billion worth of items left behind. If you think you might have something and want to check the treasurer's website, click here.
