WASHINGTON - Federal and state officials meet in Washington Thursday to start conducting preliminary assessments of the damage caused by a string of tornadoes that struck Sunday.

In a news release, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency said it would discuss the extent of the damage with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Small Business Administration and various local officials.

The information gathered will be used by the state when it makes its request for federal disaster assistance to help communities that were hit by the tornadoes.

Forecasters say at least 15 twisters struck the state, destroying or damaging hundreds of buildings.

Six people died.

Power is still out for many parts of the town.  Crews have been working around the clock to restore it.
