The Bears are getting up to speed again on Matt Nagy’s system on offense throughout this week during mini camp. Another guy who has more to learn is top draft pick Roquan Smith.
Smith is likely to start along side of Danny Trevathan this season at inside linebacker. Smith says he’s coming along well and feeling confident.
“Just being here a couple weeks putting in and doing hard work and just studying everything. I just feel more comfortable and just understanding everything more,” says Smith.
His teammates say Smith is no ordinary rookie.
“He’s an explosive player,” says defensive end Akiem Hicks. “He’s fast. Fast to the ball. From what I’ve seen he’s a fast learner. He can get his checks in more than a guy that you would normally see just coming in and trying to pick up a defense. He’s a true middle linebacker.”
“He doesn’t really attack the game like a rookie,” says fellow linebacker Aaron Lynch. “He’s taken the defensive like he’s been in it before. The way he practices he goes hard.”
