The Secretary of State’s office announced it will not hang its traditional Christmas lights over the Capitol dome this season. The office said it’s a non-essential expense it can’t afford without a budget.
Spokesperson Henry Haupt released this statement Tuesday afternoon.
“Because of the budget impasse, we made the decision to forgo putting up the Christmas lights on the Capitol dome this year. While the lights add color to the Capitol landscape and are a nice tradition, the fact of the matter is the lights are nonessential and the Secretary of State’s office is cutting back wherever possible to save money. Resources need to be maintained to continue providing customer service and essential services. We look forward to the return of the lights next holiday season.”
