Dixon clinchies trip to State with a 1-0 Super-Sectional win over Dunlap

It has been a season of ‘firsts’ for Dixon High School’s baseball team and there could be more to come.

The Dukes won their first regional championship and their first Sectional championship. Now they’ve won their first Super-Sectional championship. They edged Dunlap 1-0 in the 3A Rock Island Super-Sectional Monday night.

The only run scored in the fourth inning on a chopper to second base by Joseph Heckert. Pitcher Andrew Long and the Dukes’ defense took care of the rest. The defensive gems included a barehanded grab at second base and throw to first by shortstop Tucker Cole and a diving catch in right field by Talbir Chima with two runners on base that probably saved the game for Dixon.

“It’s unbelievable for our town,” said Dixon Coach Jason Burgess of a trip to State. “Everybody has always dreamed and hoped for this and to get us there now, it’s just wonderful to see and the experience and the showing of all these people is just awesome.”

The Dukes will play in the 3A State Semifinal Friday at noon in Joliet against Lombard Montini.
