A write-in candidate during the primary election, a democrat has turned the race for Winnebago County Board Chair into a two-man competition.

John Nelson, a local attorney, announced Monday he’s officially in the running to challenge Frank Haney (R).

“I am grateful for the support of the voters across the county for taking the time and making the effort to mark and write-in John M.Nelson,” said Nelson in a statement.  “For the last 28 years, [republicans] had the office.  A natural result of one party leadership is the serious problem we have in county government.  It is going to take a new and different approach to rid the county of its culture of corruption, mismanagement, and good old boy operation.”

Nelson and Haney will compete in the November election to replace current Chairman Scott Christiansen (R).  Haney won the republican primary outright when Christiansen decided not to run for re-election.  No democrats ran in the primary.
