1 dead, 7 rescued after 4 canoes overturned from river in Rock County

A person died after four canoes overturned on the Yahara River in Rock County Saturday afternoon.

Officials from numerous departments reported to the Murwin Park area on West Caledonia Road and North CTH H in Fulton Township at 2:53 p.m. for a report of overturned canoes with people in the water. 

Rock County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and members of the Rescue Team, a Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper, Wisconsin DNR Wardens, Edgerton Fire EMS, the Janesville Fire Department, MD-1 and the Town of Beloit Fire Department assisted at the scene. 

People were yelling for help while clinging to logs in the fast moving river with strong currents. 

Personnel assisted seven people, including one who was pinned under a submerged log, safely out of the water.

The person who was extracted from the water was sent to a hospital and later died.
