14-year-old Janesville girl drowns in Rock County canoe accident

FULTON, Ill. (WTVO) — Authorities have revealed the name of 14-year-old Grace Gordon, of Janesville, who died when her canoe overturned on Saturday in the Yahara River.

Officials from numerous departments reported to the Murwin Park area on West Caledonia Road and North CTH H in Fulton Township at 2:53 p.m. for a report of overturned canoes with people in the water. 

Rock County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and members of the Rescue Team, a Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper, Wisconsin DNR Wardens, Edgerton Fire EMS, the Janesville Fire Department, MD-1 and the Town of Beloit Fire Department assisted at the scene. 

People were yelling for help while clinging to logs in the fast moving river with strong currents. 

Personnel assisted seven people, including one who was pinned under a submerged log, safely out of the water.

Gordon was extracted from the water was sent to a hospital and later died. 

The Dane County Medical Examiner says accidental drowning was the official cause of her death.
