Two 14-year-old female teens were arrested after stealing a car, running from police, and crashing into a house.
On Tuesday around 5:50 p.m., patrol officers from the Rockford Housing Authority Police were in the area of School Street and Avon Street when they say they saw a Ford Taurus driving recklessly and attempted to stop the car. The driver did not stop and fled until the 300 block of Oakley Avenue where the driver lost control and crashed into an abandoned house.
The driver and the passenger ran from the scene. Residents in the area helped the officers locate the suspects, who were taken into custody.
Both the driver and the passenger were 14-year-old girls. The driver was later identified as being a runaway from Freeport, and the car was stolen in Freeport.
Both teens were taken to a hospital for minor injuries.
The driver was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Hit and Run, Fleeing to Elude, No Valid Driver’s License and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.
The passenger was charged with Criminal Trespass to a Vehicle.
Both girls were taken to the Juvenile Detention Center.
