A late night fire Friday leaves two Rockford families without a home.

Rockford firefighters responded to the two-family home in the 1400 block of 7th avenue just after midnight. First responders say flames were coming out of a first floor bedroom of the home. They were able to contain the fire to just that room, but a fire investigator condemned the building.

The upstairs occupant was alerted to the fire by a smoke detector and was able to alert the downstairs neighbors, who were already asleep, by banging on their door. Everyone made it out safely.

The fire caused an estimate 25,000 in damages, and is still under investigation.
