The Machesney Park division of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Dept. has a new tool to help them catch criminals.

The department recently equipped two of its Machesney Park squad cars with automated license plate readers.  They’ll be mounted on the roof of the cars.  It allows officers to cross-check plates to a national database.  It’ll notify them if the car or its owner is involved in a crime.

Police say if the readers are successful, they’ll outfit more squad cars in the future.
