2016 was Chicago’s deadliest year in nearly two decades, that’s according to a statement released by the Chicago Police Department on Sunday.
The city saw a surge in gun violence last year, including 762 murders. It’s the highest number of homicides the city has seen in 19 years.
City police also say attacks on police officers in Chicago nearly doubled. The police department plans to amp up its force in 2017 in an effort to combat the surge in violence.
