QUEENS, N.Y. (WTVO) — A 3-year-old girl was killed in a burning car on Sunday, after the doors were reportedly chained shut.
According to the Daily Mail, police found Zoey Pereira in the back seat of the car just before 9 p.m.
The New York Post reported that the back doors of the car had been chained shut.
Police say a gas canister was found in the backseat of the car.
Firefighters said the heat from the flames melted the doors, allowing them to open them and get the girl.
The girl’s 39-year-old father had been driving erratically prior to the car going up in flames, according to witnesses, who said he was fully engulfed in flames when he jumped into a nearby pond.
Police took the father into custody. He suffered second and third degree burns and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
