The Winnebago County Coroner’s office sent out a warning Monday after a recent spike in heroin related overdoses.
Chief Deputy Coroner William Hintz says four men and one woman are suspected to have overdosed on the drug since Friday. Hintz, says heroin is an epidemic and it’s affecting people of all ages and the conversation to stop the problem starts at home.
“This is something that is in our community,” said Hintz. “This is something that’s very bad. Let the kids know. Let the youth know. It is something that can snatch you without you even realizing it.”
Hintz says the coroner’s office projects 100 heroin overdose related deaths this year in Winnebago County alone. In 2015, the drug claimed 125 lives.
