A Rockford man found guilty of 2017 murder is granted new trial

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A man found guilty in a 2017 murder is granted a  new trial.

Jamie Spates and his brother Marcus Spates were convicted in the killing of 27-year-old Isaiah Starks in March 2018.

In October 2017, Starks was shot to death on Cole Avenue, West of South Main Street.

Prosecutors say he was shot during a fight with the brothers after the pair had burglarized his home.

During Jamie Spates first trial, the defense argued that Jamie didn’t fire the deadly shot and the gun accidentally went off.

Spate’s bond is set at $2 million.

No date has been set for his retrial.
