Alderman Concerned Over Repeated Attacks on Elderly Man

Rockford aldermen are expressing concern over a group of juveniles reportedly terrorizing an elderly man on the city’s west side.

5th Ward Alderwoman Venita Hervey says a man in her ward has been repeatedly victimized by a group of neighbors. She says they have broken into his home and attacked him 6 or 7 times, and police have been forced to set up shop outside to prevent it.

Hervey adds that the same group was attacking people in a different area of Rockford before moving to her ward. She and several other aldermen are now demanding a more strict landlord-tenant ordinance to prevent landlords from renting to habitual criminals.

“These people should not have been able to rent anywhere within the boundaries of this city,” said Hervey. “Not with impunity. And literally, they’re bouncing from one place to another, and creating havoc.”

Police Chief Dan O’Shea says the entire thing is under investigation. He could not go into detail, but says that two suspects have been arrested so far.
