“Our community is full of every day heroes who help others in need,” said Lisa La Sala, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Northwest Illinois said in a news release. “We saw so many neighbors helping neighbors following the April tornadoes last year that have truly inspired us all.”
More than 200 Red Cross volunteers mobilized to provide food, shelter, relief items, and comfort to tornado victims in the aftermath of the April 9th tornadoes, which included more than 8,000 meals and 13,000 relief supplies like cleanup kits and hygiene items. In the year following the tornadoes, the Red Cross, working with government and community partners, continued to help disaster victims develop recovery plans, receive additional financial assistance, and access partner resources throughout the impacted counties.
A telethon held in conjunction with WTVO-17 in the days following the disaster also raised about $150,000 for Red Cross disaster relief efforts.
The Red Cross relies on donations of time, money and blood to do its work. For more information, go to RedCross.org.
