Anchors meet Portia the therapy dog

There is a need for therapy dogs in Rockford at hospitals, nursing homes, hospice organization and the Winnebago County 17th Judicial Court. Therapy dogs are used to help lower anxiety, provide comfort and affection.

Kathleen Alsup brought her 9-year-old rescue Bullmastiff, Portia. Portia has been in the Animal Assisted Therapy program for five years. Portia started volunteering at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in 2010.

Alsup is an AKC Obedience certified evaluator, a tester and observer for Alliance of Therapy Dogs and a volunteer trainer at Forest City Dog Training Club.
