Arm restored on Freeport’s Harry Caray statue after vandalism

News

Earlier this week, vandals used a baseball bat to break off an arm from the Harry Caray statue at Freeport’s Little Cubs Field.

The statue was repaired on Thursday. Volunteers spent an hour reattaching the arm using some glue and a few screws.

Harry’s microphone is back, too.

On Sunday, according to police, a group of juveniles used a bat to damage the statue and then covered the field with 20 pounds of chalk.

A 12-year-old juvenile was charged with Criminal Damage to Property. Since it is a first time offense, he will be sent through the Stephenson County Juvenile Diversion Program. If the offender completes the program, the charges will be expunged from his permanent record.
