Auburn High School student Andrew Baxter was chosen from a pool of 15,000 finalist to win a $2,500 scholarship and the distinction of being a National Merit Scholar.
Four Auburn students were named as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, including Baxter, Ellen Chidley, Logan Power and William Snedegar. All four are students in the Gifted Academy at Auburn.
Winners in the program are the finalists from each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
About 1.6 million students from more than 22,000 high schools entered the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of high school seniors in the United States.
