Autopsy: NIU Studen Quintonio Legrier Was Shot Six Times by Chicago Police

UPDATE (1/14/16): An autopsy has revealed that Quintonio Legrier, the NIU student killed by Chicago Police while home on holiday break, was shot six times.

It also found that Legrier had marijuana in his system at the time.

Bettie Jones, who was killed in the same shooting on the day after Christmas, died of a single gunshot wound to the chest. Police have admitted that she was killed on accident.

A Northern Illinois University student, home on winter break, is shot dead by police at his Chicago apartment complex Saturday morning.

The shooting happened just before 4:40 A.M. in Garfield Park on the city’s west side. Police were responding to what they described as a domestic disturbance call where officers encountered a combative individual. That individual was later identified as 19-year-old Quintonio Legrier, an engineering student at NIU. His father was the one who made the 9-1-1 call, saying his son was holding a metal baseball bat and acting erratically.

His mother told the ABC affiliate in Chicago Quintonio suffered from a mental illness but never acted this way before.

“I was just with my son on Christmas,” Janet Cooksey said, after learning her son had died at the hospital. “I talked to him and told him he has to control his temper, but he wasn’t violent.”

A 56-year-old woman, who was a downstairs tenant in the building, was also shot and killed during the incident.

The Independent Police Review Authority is now investigating.
