As the entire Rockford community continues to reel from the death of officer Jaimie Cox, the Winnebago County Coroner has released his official cause of death.

A preliminary autopsy revealed Officer Cox was not shot: his cause of death is listed as “blunt force trauma.”

Eddie Patterson, the man found dead in the car Officer Cox had pulled over, did suffer a gunshot wound. He also suffered blunt force trauma in the incident. His official cause of is listed as a result from the gunshot wound.

Authorities say the plates on Patterson’s truck did not match the truck, which may have been the reason Officer Cox pulled Patterson over.

An initial investigation confirmed Officer Cox was involved in a scuffle during the traffic stop, which resulted in him becoming entangled by the suspect vehicle. Following the autopsy, that entanglement appears to be what caused his death.

An investigation is ongoing by Rockford Police and the Winnebago-Boone County Integrity Task Force.
