Beloit College breaks ground on Powerhouse student center

News

BELOIT, Wis. (WTVO) — Beloit College breaks ground on phase one of the new student center.

The pedestrian bridge over Pleasant Street will be installed this week.

The walkway is part of the school’s new student union and recreation center called the Powerhouse.

Belvidere native and world renowned architect Jeanne Gang is behind the design.

The project, including the 120,000 square foot center, costs $38 million.

Organizers say the new building encourages student engagement.

“What we’re trying to do here in Beloit College is breakdown those walls just like we do and have done for about 50 years, to have learning be in and outside the classroom,” said Dan Schooff, Project Manager of Powerhouse Project. “This building amplifies that.”

The Powerhouse center re-purposes the former Blackhawk Generating Station and opens in October.
