Beloit company awarded contract to build ship engines for U.S. Navy

A Beloit company known for it’s big products has landed a big contract with the U.S. Navy.

Fairbanks Morse was the focus of a Made in the Stateline report earlier this year. Just a few days ago, the company announced a new deal to build four main diesel engines for the Navy’s new LPD 30.

Those are the ships used to transport marines and their equipment onto the battlefield.

Fairbanks Morse’s new engines are for the next phase of LPD’s called “Flight 2.”

The ships have a flight deck and a hangar, plus cargo space, and enough room for 500 marines.

Fairbanks will deliver the power plants in the third quarter of 2020, and then be a part of installation, testing, and sea trials.

The company has about 400 employees in Beloit and another 100 scattered throughout the country in service centers. The company is headquartered in Washington D.C.

Several generations of local families have worked at the Beloit factory over the last 125 years.
