Beloit police searching for ‘person of interest’ in Saturday homicide

28-year-old James Tomten, of Janesville, was murdered in the City of Beloit on Saturday, according to police.

According to the Beloit Police Department, witnesses reported seeing a man slumped inside a beige Cadillac Escalade in the 800 block of Vine Street around 2:38 p.m.

Police believe Tomten was shot 12:20 p.m. in his car, just southwest of the 4th Street and Portland Avenue intersection. The car rolled to a stop and into a snowbank, where it sat running for several hours until police were called.

Police believe the suspect was a passenger in the vehicle. 

Police say a person of interest in the investigation is a male who was seen with Tomten at a business on the East side of Beloit, prior to the homicide. The man is described as lighter skinned male, thin build, 5’10” – 6’2″ inches tall, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt with white lettering, blue jeans, and red tennis shoes.

It is reported that Tomten and his attacker knew each other.

The investigation is ongoing.
