Time has run out for one of CherryVale Mall’s anchor stores as Bergner’s will shut its doors for the last time Wednesday night.
Several interested suitors are considering filling the void Bergner’s will leave behind.
“I’m so sad,” said Kathy Eden, a Bergner’s shopper we spoke to.
“I’ve lived here all my life – 50 years – and I’ve been coming here,” said Charles Warner. “It’s a classic store that you’d always see.”
The store not only served as a convenience for area residents for years, but provided lasting memories, too.
“Bergner’s has been one of my go-to stores for years,” said Eden. “As a matter of fact, I used to bring my mother here all the time. She’s a petite, and Bergner’s was the only place she ever wanted to go! I just walked through there and it felt like a ghost town. I was like, I gotta get out of here because I’m just going to cry.”
The store was almost bare on Wednesday as the final shoppers walked through the aisles. Liquidation sales had nearly emptied those aisles long before closing day.
The question now is, what will move into such a large, empty space?
CherryVale Mall officials say there has been plenty of interest.
“There’s quite a bit of interest in this space,” said Melissa Cavanagh, Marketing Director for CherryVale. “It has been a really long time since CherryVale had a space this big available, so we are excited. We do see this as an opportunity to really expand.”
“[I’m] excited to see what’s going to come here next, be it something for the family, something entertaining, or something you can just enjoy on a weekend or weekday,” said Warner.
Eden said, “I’ve appreciated Bergner’s being there all these years. I’ve appreciated all the good service that has been here, and we’ll be looking forward to what’s coming next.”
Don’t expect to see a store pop up at the Bergner’s location anytime soon, Cavanaugh warns. She says that since the store is so large, a lot of details have to be hashed out before anyone signs a lease.
