The Rockford Peaches spent their Saturday afternoon with an opening ceremony and exhibition game at Beyer Stadium for the team’s 75th Anniversary.
Visitors packed the stands to watch a game featuring Rockford notables, a star from the film ‘A League of Their Own’, and the Rockford Starfires baseball team.
Former Peaches signed autographs for fans.
One former athlete said that with the turnout for each event over the 5 days of the anniversary celebration, it shows the community still supports the Peaches and women’s sports.
“It’s wonderful the ay everybody accepts us,” said Dorris Calacurcio, a former Rockford Peach. “Usually, when we were told, oh, girl’s can’t play baseball, but now, everyone’s saying the girls are as good as some of the guys, so we’re happy about that.”
Closing ceremonies were held Sunday, along with a home run derby.
