Body Found in Rock River Identified

UPDATE (3/17/16) – The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office identified the woman’s body as 36 year-old Memory Griffis.  She was last seen December 6th, 2015.  A cause of death still hasn’t been determined.

UPDATE (3/10/16):  The body found in the Rock River on Wednesday afternoon is that of middle-aged black female according to the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office.

The body is reported to be in a state of moderate decomposition consistent with being in the river for several months. 

There was no trauma found on her body, nor were there any identifing marks or tatoos on her.  Further tests will be done in an attempt to determine her identity.

The death remains under investigation by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department.

UPDATE (6:20pm) – Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Hintz tells Eyewitness News the woman’s body did not appear to have any trauma on it.  X-rays will be taken tonight.  An autopsy will be performed Thursday.

The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office reports that an unidentified woman’s body was recovered from the Rock River Wednesday afternoon.

The body recovered at around 2:22pm was taken from the river near 4848 S. Main St. in Rockford about 15 feet from the shoreline.

The Coroner says an examination of the body indicates it is that of a female in a moderate state of decomposition.

The case is being investigated by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, while an autopsy is pending from the Coroner’s Office.
