A volunteer at the Boone County Jail is honored for her years of voluntary service.
Beryl Hutson received the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award. She’s been involved in the jail’s Detainee Development and Instruction Program for 15 years.
The program involves helping inmates with life after incarceration, parenting, and anger management. Hutson said, “I believe that the inmates have been given a timeout by God. This is their chance to get their feet back on the right track, so when they leave the jail, they can enjoy life the way they should.”
Hutson also said it was satisfying to expose inmates to things that they normally wouldn’t have access to while in jail.
