California has rejected a plan by the federal government to send the state’s National Guard troops to the border, two U.S. officials told The Associated Press.

The officials said the work is too closely tied to immigration enforcement, the AP report said.

Gov. Jerry Brown agreed to send troops to the border to focus on fighting crime and not enforce policies of Washington, CNN reported last week.

Last week, Brown pledged to send 400 troops on the condition the support had nothing to do with immigration enforcement.
