“Can You Hear Me?” Phone Scam Hits Rockford

A new phone scam circulating could cost you, just by answering the phone.

The Better Business Bureau warning about the so-called “Can You Hear Me?” scam. They say when picked up, the caller asks, “can you hear me?” When the victim says “yes,” the scammer can edit that response to sound like you authorized a major purchase.

The BBB says the scam has recently hit many major cities, and Eyewitness News has received several calls confirming that the scam has been attempted on Rockford residents.

To avoid being scammed, officials say simply hang up before responding to any questions from someone calling from a number you’re unfamiliar with.
