Candelight Vigil Held for Leaf River Firefighter Killed in Blaze

News

Leaf  River residents came together to mourn the loss of the 19-year-old volunteer firefighter killed in a house fire last week.

They gathered in front of the Leaf River Fire Station Sunday night for a vigil honoring Gregory Wood. Wood was killed when his Leaf River home went up in flames early Friday morning. His father and brother were seriously burned.

Dozens huddled together, holding candles and remembering the teen taken too soon. The Leaf River Fire Chief says Wood started training to be a firefighter when he was just a freshman in high school. He says Wood stood out among most teens.

“Most young kids would rather play video games or something else, and not worry about running out to help someone else,” said Fire Chief Steve Shelton. “And he was there for that…the video games didn’t matter to him. Helping his community did.”

Chief Shelton says counselors will be at the fire station starting this week for any firefighter who made need them.
