Angry outbursts were heard from Candlewick Lake residents Monday night, as Aqua America tried to answer questions at an open house about why their water is turning yellow and orange.
Aqua says their main water well is now fixed and the water is safe to drink. However, many residents aren’t convinced. One resident even demanded that the Aqua spokesperson drink the discolored water, and after some hesitation, he did.
Dana Drago has lived in Candlewick Lake for over a decade, and she says the water problems have been an issue on and off for years.
“The water gets really yellow,” said Drago. “Like when we wash clothes, everything turns yellow, you can’t get it out; it gets all stained. The toilets are stained, and all the sinks, the bathtub.”
This specific water issue has been ongoing in Candlewick Lake for over a month. Aqua and the Candlewick Board say they notified residents, but many say that’s not true.
“Aqua told me that they did notify everybody, and I didn’t get any notification for it,” said Drago.
“They never notified anybody,” said long-time resident Jo Feich. “And when I brought it up to the board tonight they took off.”
Angela Taillet started a Facebook page for residents experiencing water problems, with videos of orange-juice like water being posted daily. She says she’s had enough of Aqua and wants them out, but the board has been unsupported.
“We’d like to be able to hook up to the Village of Poplar Grove, but like I said, the board doesn’t seem to want to ask,” said Taillet. “They save they’ve done everything they can do, but we’re still stuck with this company, so I don’t know if they’ve done everything they can do.”
Aqua is not currently offering residents refunds on their water bills, further increasing the tension between the company and residents.
