A small Capron neighborhood turns into a crime scene early Friday morning. The Boone County Sheriff’s Office says they were called to do a welfare check inside a mobile home. After hearing no response, they forced their way inside.
“When they arrived, they found two injured subjects inside the trailer,” said Boone County Sheriff’s Investigation Sergeant Darren Rowe. “One ended up being a female who was deceased. Then, a male was transported to a local hospital.”
Police say that man is in a Rockford hospital in critical but stable condition. He is being investigated as a person of interest in the murder.
“It was a couple,” said Rowe. “At this point, it’s early in the investigation but it does appear to be domestic related.”
Michael Chafin lives across the street from the victim’s trailer. He says deputies knocked on his door early Friday morning looking for a key to get in his neighbor’s trailer when he realized what was happening just outside his home.
“To be honest, it was sad,” said Chafin. “That’s the first thing that I got. I felt bad for the family.”
The couple’s three small children were also found inside but weren’t hurt. Chafin says just a few days ago, he watched the man teach the oldest child how to ride a bike.
“I’m still shocked,” said Chafin. “It’s just pure disbelief. I’m really sad for the children. I can’t even imagine what they’re going through.”
Chafin says their Capron trailer park neighborhood is a close knit community.
“They would have parties, we would have parties. They’d come over and eat and we’d come over and eat. Their kids played with mine. I never expected [this].”
