Gary Caruana fought off challenger Kurt Ditzler to remain the incumbent nominee for Winnebago County Sheriff.

Ditzler was a former chief deputy with the county. Caruana faced unpopular fiscal cuts, of over $4 million from his budget, causing the layoff of officers in the court jails, and removing others from patrol on the street.

Caruana will face Democrat Bob Springer in the November 6th general election.
