Hundreds gathered outside the Department of Corrections Headquarters in Springfield on Wednesday to honor the men and women who’ve died in the line of duty within the last year.
Attendees paid tribute to 35 men and women died while serving the state. Officers placed a single yellow rose next to their names on a memorial wall. Gov. Bruce Rauner (R-IL) was in attendance, along with the loved ones of those who passed.
“It’s amazing kind of emotional,” said Rosalie Geralds who attended the ceremony. “But, that’s a good thing. I think it’s amazing what they do here every year.”
The agency also recognized five employees for their outstanding contributions.
