One man is in custody after returning to a Dixon hardware store that he had stolen from days earlier.

Orlando Gates, 36, of Chicago, was arrested on Monday. Back on July 12, Gates, and another man, rented two floor sanders from the ACE Hardware on N. Galena Avenue, then never returned the equipment.

On Monday, Gates returned to the store driving a U-Haul van trying to rent more equipment. Store employees recognized him from the initial incident and called police. When police arrived, they noted that the U-Haul van had been reported stolen out of Nebraska.

When Gates saw authorities arriving, he took off on foot. Following a short chase, officers took him into custody. He’s charged with unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, theft and resisting a police officer. He was already wanted on a warrant for a parole violation.

A warrant has also been issued for the second subject involved in the July 12 incident. Police believe he is Andrew Thomas, 24, of Chicago.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call Dixon Police at 815-288-4411.
