Police putting out a warning, advising parents to teach their children about weapon safety after a child in Beloit found a loaded handgun while playing in his own backyard.
Officers were alerted of the gun being found in the 1800 block of Dewey on Tuesday. They say it may have come from a suspect who had run from police on the previous day. That is under investigation.
The boy was playing with a friend in the yard when the gun was found. Neither was hurt.
Beloit Police are now asking parents and guardians to talk to their kids about what they should do if they find a gun, knife, needle or anything suspicious. Outside of a tragic accident, police say touching a weapon or suspicious item could also contaminate evidence.
