OSF Saint Anthony Medical System held a “Safety Bowl” at the Belvidere YMCA on Monday morning.
Children and their families learned about making “healthy choices” at home, in school, and outdoors.
The kids got a chance to make their own health snacks, see broken bones in X-rays, and read to therapy dogs.
Organizers of the event say it is important to make children a part of the learning experience.
“They’re geared to be hands-on activities, so a lot of the activities, they can touch something,” said Nathan Hamman, the Manager for Wellness and Weight Management at OSF. “It’s not just about sitting and learning. They’re more engaged when they’re able to participate in the activity.”
This is the third year for the “Safety Bowl” event.
