Church volunteers collect winter clothing for Rockford’s homeless

News

Rockford’s homeless population has had to face the challenges of a particularly harsh winter this year, with limited spaces available in shelters and few warming centers.

With a mission to give back to the community, a group of volunteers from local churches decided to take on the cause of helping those in need by putting together care kits for the homeless.

Volunteers met at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church to assemble the kits that contained food, hand warmers, lip balm, and a McDonald’s gift card.

“We feel like this is a good cause and we’re going to carry these bags in our cars, and when we see a homeless person, if they seem to need something, we’re going to help them and show them the good Lord loves them and we love them,” said volunteer Carol Ostrom.

The Gloria Dei Lutheran Church is in the process of collecting diapers for mothers in need.
