The cold is no joke, as temperatures this Sunday reached down into negative digits, which kept most Rockford residents indoors. Instead, they sat down in the heat to watch some football.
“Avoiding the cold, ‘Legends’ has the ‘NFL’ package so I can watch several games, I love it,” said Bears fan Tom McCarthy at Legends Bar and Grill.
Bears and Packers fans made their way to sports bars like Legends and Rascal’s to find the atmosphere of Soldier Field, minus the climate.
“It’s crazy, I think the people are nuts for being out there, but I mean it has got to be a good time, still. You have to root for your team,” said Rascal’s bartender Trisha Mastrangeli. “Hopefully, they keep their shirts on. I know a couple of weeks ago, when it was snowing, there was a lot of them with their shirts off. So, pretty much remember frost bite exists,” said Legends waitress Raven Burleson, on those at Soldier Field.
Raven and Trisha both said business was a little slow for a Sunday Bears and Packers game, most likely due to the frigid conditions.
“Usually Packers, Bears games are really busy, like we are running around constantly. Today, with it so cold out, we still have our very loyal patrons that will be here no matter what,” said Raven.
“I mean, the girls have more tables than normal, but that’s because of the game playing tonight. It is actually kind of slow around the bar though. I say it definitely started out slow, the weather, nobody wanted to go outside,” said Trisha.
Packers fan Greg Ball made his way from Wausau, Wisconsin to watch the game. He said this weather doesn’t phase him. “Come to Lambeau, we’ll really give you some cold weather, get the wind chill involved,” said Ball.
