Rockford city officials have opted not to rename the Morgan Street Bridge to the Police Memorial Bridge, despite efforts of a committee that included family members of Officer Jaimie Cox.

The Police Memorial Bridge Committee collected 3,000 signatures since November 2017 to encourage the city to adopt the name “Police Memorial Bridge” as either an official or honorary renaming of the Morgan Street Bridge.

According to the committee’s Facebook page, it is made up of police family members, police wives, former police members and community members who were interested in honoring fallen officers with a proposal to rename the bridge.

During a meeting with city leaders last Tuesday, including Mayor Tom McNamara, Ald. Venita Hervey, former Ald. Victory Bell, Orchid neighborhood leader Becky Lichty, and community activist Donald Wright, the committee was told that no city leaders supported the renaming of the bridge.
