The City of Rockford will begin enforcing a new licensing ordinance for taxi cab operators.

According to the requirements of the ordinance, a taxi cab driver must be at least 21 years old, complete an application, provide a state driver’s license, submit a state background check, and pay a fee of $16.

In addition, each taxi cab must have a separate license, at $52 per vehicle.

The ordinance does not affect ridesharing businesses, like Uber or Lyft. Limousines and party buses are also exempt.

The City will begin enforcement of the ordinance on September 1st, 2018. Anyone without the appropriate license after that date will face a fine.
