City pledges to bring down blighted Rockford church, following partial collapse in April

A blighted Rockford church that has been sitting, half demolished, for a year will soon come down, the City’s legal department announced Wednesday.

In April, neighbors told Eyewitness News they were angered by the delay in the demolition of the former New Fellowship Baptist Church, which partially stands at the corner of 2nd Avenue and 4th Street after it collapse in August of 2017.

The building has not been touched since.

City leaders blamed an ongoing court battle for the delay. Attorneys say they’ll meet with the owner to discuss what to do with the site once it’s clear.
