The U.S. Coast Guard Academy has named an athletic field house after the school’s first African American head coach, who is a native of Rockford.

According to the Navy Times, the facility will now be named the Dr. Hallie Gregory Field House after Gregory, who was a professor from 1971 to 1989, a track coach in 1980, and basketball coach from 1984 until 1989. He was also assistant athletics director in 1989.

Dr. Gregory was inducted into the academy’s hall of fame in 2001.

He was the first black teacher at Guilford High School in Rockford.
